LearnTea
Jan 2016 - Mar. 2016
LearnTea is a tangible tea ceremony learning system, which is designed to help people learn tea ceremony more easily and properly.
The system is augmented with a multi-touch screen and a tea set equipped with related sensors. We implemented the control process, interface and visual arts of the system by using Arduino, Processing and Illustrator, and programmed in Java.
This system aims to guide users to learn the correct procedure of the tea ceremony and proper etiquette at the tea table step by step. Through each step, users will gain an interactive experience through touching, responding to, and also receiving feedback from the learning system.

PROCEDURE DESCRIPTION
The purpose of our Interactive Tea Culture Teaching Table is to guide users through the tea ceremony process via a tangible table with the help of Arduino, related sensors and a multi-touch screen. Through each step, users will gain an interactive experience through touching, responding to, and also receiving feedback from the learning system. We hope to provide users the ability to learn the correct sequence of the tea ceremony and proper etiquette at the tea table. Through the multiple locations of a world map and tea options, the project will also allow them to experience a myriad of different tea cultures.
The procedure is showed below:
The procedure is showed below:
STEP 1 | LIGHT THE INCENSE
Light incense to make peaceful atmosphere and calm yourself down.
We use smoke sensor to test whether the user has finished this process, if the processed is finished, the system will play a piece of music and go to the next step. Input: smoke, Feedback: aural feedback, play music.
|
STEP 2 | WAHS THE TEA SET
Pour hot water into the tea set to make them clean, and then pour off. We use temperature sensor to test this process. And if the process is finished, the instruction will change to guide users to the next step. Input: temperature, Feedback: visual feedback, instructions change. |
STEP 3 | COOL THE 100C WATER
Pour hot water into the teapot and wait for the temperature to be 80 Celsius.
We also use temperature sensor to test this process. Input: temperature, Feedback: visual feedback, instructions change.

We also use temperature sensor to test this process. Input: temperature, Feedback: visual feedback, instructions change.
STEP 4 | WAKEN THE TEA
Add the proper amount of tealeaves to another teaglass, and pour hot water to warm the teaglass in order to awake tea.
We use several cups to hold the tea leaves from different countries, and use the lights to guide users to choose the right cup and take proper amount of tealeaves into teaglass. The timer is used to test the waiting time. Input: time, Feedback: visual feedback, instructions change.
STEP 5 | BREW THE TEA
Pour hot water into the teaglass with paced three ups and downs (teapot up and down).
We use accelerated sensor to test the accelerated speed for this process. Input: acceleration, Feedback: visual feedback, instructions change.
STEP 6 | ENJOY THE TEA
Wait for the tealeaves slowly sinking to the bottom of the teapot, then enjoys tea!
