Water Strategy for China
Feb. 5 - Feb. 8, 2013
In this research project, our group has successfully built a model for water strategy to solve the severe water problem in 2025 for China. Our strategy contains several smaller models, and each one of them can solve part of the problem for us.
This project was done in four days for 2013 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). We won Honorable Mention among 5636 participated teams.

MODEL FOR DEGREE OF FRESHWATER SHORTAGE
Our group analyzed the composition of freshwater—supply and demand and used data to build our first model to address the degree of freshwater shortage. With this model we divided the provinces of China to five areas to simplify our discussion.
GREY MODEL (GM)
We treated each area as a unit to predict the freshwater supply and demand. Because the demand included four parts: water for living, industrial water, agricultural water and ecological water, we developed different models separately to predict every part. We applied Grey Model (GM) and Logistic population model to the prediction of living water, and GM for other three aspects. In addition, we used curve fitting model to get the supply water for 2025. Then we tested the predictions and found that the matching was all good.
MINIMUM SPANNING TREE (MST) & FERMAT POINT
We analyzed the difference between the supply and demand among areas to decide the storage and movement of freshwater. We formatted Minimum Spanning Tree (MTS) to choose the best movement routes and used Fermat point to choose a better position to build reservoirs to storage with the less cost. Furthermore, we analyzed the cost of de-salinization and drew the conclusion that de-salinization was cheaper but only appropriate for the places closed to the sea.
